The Route - Days 8 & 9

Days 8 and 9 of the Coast to Coast Walk pass through the 17th century Lead mining area of Swaledale before reaching the more impressive scenary on the approach to Richmond.

 

Day 8 - Keld to Reeth - 11 miles

Day 8 - Stage 1
Stage 1 - Keld to Level House Bridge

The route passes through the 17th century Lead mining area of Swaledale. There will be much evidence of industrial decay and scars left on the landscape.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 8 - Stage 2
Stage 2 - Level House Bridge to Reeth

The route continues to pass through evidence of mining activity where the spoil is now be being reclaimed. Once passed the deep ravine of Cringley Bottom there is a high level route that provide excellent views in the course of reaching Reeth

Day 9 - Reeth to Richmond - 11 miles

Day 9 - Stage 1
Stage 1 - Reeth to Marske

The route from Reeth to Richmond could be completed in a half day but Wainwright recommends a slowler walk to take in the scenery and to visit Marrick Priory, Marske Hall. 

 

 

 

 

 

Day 9 - Stage 2
Stage 2 - Marske to Richmond

The main landmarks on this stage include Willance's Leap monument and Richmond. A good photographic opportunity exists at Richmond and a visit to the Norman castle and Richmond bride is recommended if time permits.
